Add event_id parameters to GA4 tag

When implementing server-side tagging, adding an event_id parameter to your GA4 event tag is essential for proper deduplication. This ensures that Meta receives both browser events from the Facebook Pixel tag and server events from your sGTM container with matching event IDs. By including the event_id, Meta can accurately deduplicate the events sent from both sources, avoiding duplicate counts in your reporting.

In this document, you’ll learn how to add an event_id parameter to your GA4 tag and how ro add an event_id variable.

Adding an Event_ID Variable

Let’s get started 🚀

Add event_id Parameters

The event_id parameter is a unique identifier used to link browser events from the Facebook Pixel tag with server events from the GA4 tag sent via sGTM. Adding this parameter ensures Meta can deduplicate events accurately, avoiding duplicate tracking.

Ensure that your Facebook Pixel tag with the same event name and trigger has the same event ID variable filled in under ‘More Settings’.

Adding an Event_ID Variable

If an event_id variable is not already available in your GTM setup, you can create one using the Unique ID template. This variable generates a unique identifier for each event, which is critical for deduplicating browser and server events.

In this section, you’ll learn how to locate the Unique ID template in the gallery, add it to your workspace, and configure it to work with your GA4 and Facebook Pixel tags.
