Consent settings within your GTM web container

The constant changes in privacy legislation have made it essential for websites to obtain explicit user consent before using cookies and tracking scripts for advertising and analytics. To help businesses, Google has introduced a new feature: consent settings. This allows for the activation of tags to be adjusted based on user consent. It aids in managing analytics and marketing cookies, while respecting user decisions.

Enable the consent settings within your web container.

Within your tags overview, a shield icon should appear in the upper right corner

Here, you can select which additional consent is required to fire a specific tag

Select a couple of tags that create events for marketing platforms (such as meta ads for example)

Click the shield with the gear in front of it.

Indicate which consent is required for the tag to activate.

For marketing platform tags, specify that ad_storage (and optionally ad_user_data and ad_personalization) consent is needed.
For a chatbot or form listener in the form of HTML tags, specify that functionality_storage consent is needed.
For an analytical tool such as Hotjar, Piwik Pro, or Microsoft Clarity, specify that analytics_storage consent is needed.
For tags with ‘built-in consent checks’, specify that no additional consent is needed.
